Understanding the mitzvah

What is שַׁעַטְנֵז?

Shatnez is the Torah prohibition against wearing wool and linen woven together in a single garment. The challenge is that these fibers are rarely on the label — they hide in canvassing, shoulder padding, linings, reinforcement tape and the very thread that holds a suit together.

That's why a garment can be "100% wool" on the tag and still contain shatnez. The only way to know with certainty is to open the hidden areas and examine the fibers directly — which is exactly what testing is for.

A label tells you what's advertised. Testing tells you what's true.

Wool — the warm fiber

Common in suits, jackets, overcoats and winter dresses, often in places you can't see from the outside.

Linen — the hidden one

Frequently used in chest canvas, interfacing and stitching, where it quietly creates a shatnez problem.

Testing — the certainty

We identify the fibers, locate any forbidden combination, and make the garment permissible to wear.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked

What is shatnez, exactly?
Shatnez is the Torah prohibition against wearing wool and linen together in one garment. Because fibers are often hidden in linings, padding, canvas and thread, a garment can contain shatnez even when the label doesn't mention it. Testing is the only way to know for certain.
How does the mail-in service work?
Choose your garments and place an order, ship them to our Passaic laboratory, and we test each one by hand. We then mail your garments back with a certificate. We serve clients worldwide — see the mail-in section for details on return shipping.
Which garments should be tested?
Suits, sport jackets, overcoats, dresses, skirts, vests and neckties most often contain wool or linen and should be checked before wearing. When in doubt, it's worth testing — call us if you're unsure about a specific item.
How long does it take?
Most garments are tested within a few business days of arrival. Need it for a wedding, bar mitzvah or Yom Tov? Rush service is available — call us to arrange it.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We accept garments from anywhere in the world. Mail them to our lab and we'll return them to you with results. International return shipping is quoted based on your destination.
How do I get a shipping label to send my garments?
U.S. customers: after you order and pay online (testing + round-trip shipping), we email you a prepaid label. Print it, attach it to your package, and drop it off — there's no postage to buy. We return your garments with a prepaid label and a certificate. International customers ship to us with their local carrier and we quote the return.
What if shatnez is found in my garment?
In many cases the forbidden combination can be removed or corrected so the garment becomes permissible to wear. We'll explain what we found and the options before any work is done.
